Welcome to road cycling in Bulgaria.

Road cycling in Bulgaria

This is a beautiful country with stunning scenery and a gorgeous coastline.

Do you want to ride somewhere new and exciting? Are searching for challenging experiences? Then let me show you Bulgaria.

Ride along the East Coast, in the Stara Planina Mountains and the Burgas Valley, all with outstanding views. Experience local sites and take in the beauty of this country. You won’t be disappointed.

The week includes five organised rides, the third being a small hill TT ride with the afternoon spent visiting (for a small fee) the three local sites of Old Nessebar, St. Vlas Marina and the Bulgarian Motorcycle Museum. (The Museum has an optional entrance fee of 20 levs).

The rides will get more arduous as the week progresses, with some challenging surfaces which are sometimes very rugged (Please see below for tyre specifications etc). All rides will be at a brisk but steady club pace (between 15-20 mph avg), with a few Strava segments thrown in for the more competitive amongst you.

We also offer an opportunity to travel outside the Burgas Valley, returning by bike. This is optional and does incur transport expenses.

As stated in the itinerary, there will be some rugged surfaces on some of the rides. Therefore, please do not bring carbon wheels or tubular tyres. All season tyres are really a must.

Helmets are an absolute necessity for safety and insurance purposes.

INSURANCE IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. Please ensure you have holiday insurance that covers cycling on arrival. No insurance on arrival, no cycling.

You will need to bring your own nutrition for rides.

Fresh mountain spring water is available on all the rides, whereas gels etc are not.

Please bring with you a Garmin or other GPS device if you have one, especially those wanting to partake in the Strava segments of the rides.

We have mechanical back-up on call should it be needed. Small fees for spares/replacements may be incurred, but they will be very reasonable.

Looking forward to your company on the road, Charlie

Ravda is a charming holiday village around fifteen minutes from the more well-known resorts of Nesebar and Sunny Beach, and around twenty minutes from Burgas Airport. The village is made up of a main street filled with restaurants and shops, with a very nice beach two minutes walk from the centre.

Although the holiday season for the village itself will be coming to a close towards the end of September, there will still be a range of restaurants that remain open throughout the warm autumn months. A meal for two and a bottle of wine will set you back around £15, which I'm sure you'll agree is very reasonable!

Location: Holiday Complex, Ravda.

The self-catering accommodation comprises of a one- bedroom apartment with a sofa-bed in the living room (meaning it sleeps a maximum of four people). The apartments are cleaned daily, and the linen will be changed mid-week. A laundry service is also available.

A receptionist is on duty every day, and the complex has 24/7 security. So, whether you choose to keep your bikes in your apartment or in the designated area, they will be completely safe.

I will be on hand on your arrival to help you settle in and deal with any requests you might have.

All payments are in cash (pound sterling) on arrival. Exchange rates in the UK are vastly different to Bulgaria. You only need to change £50.00 in the UK to get trough the first couple of days. You will get far more bulgarian lev exchanging over here.

Holiday pricing includes airport transfers, 5 guided rides and accommodation. NO hidden extras.

We can only accommodate 10 riders per week, therefore it is imperative that you contact me before you make any other arrangements. Please, please do not book a flight and simply arrive hoping to ride with us. If might not be possible.

Upon first contact I will send you payment details (account number etc). You will then have one month to pay a non-refundable deposit (This is deductable from your holiday price) of £80 per person to guarantee your places for the week. I will send you a confirmation email once I have received the deposit. You may then feel free to book your flights!

Cycling through purple lavender clouds, passing stork‘s nests, finding yourself in wallnut tree-lined streets, between orchards and home gardens... Apart from the athletic challenge Charlie took me on a bautiful journey through Bulgaria! I‘m still smiling when I think of it!

I rode with Charlie, for the one day my wife allowed me to on our family holiday! He knew all the best routes and water points on the way and was great company. We cycled into the Balkans and i was impressed with the beautiful views. Charlie was great as a ride leader and i could tell he had my best interests at heart. When cycling in another country you need someone you can count on, Charlie is it. I cannot recommend roadcyclingbulgaria enough. Top notch riding. Lee

Had a vacation in Ravda 14 days in August and wanted to do some biking and keep on training and did some searches on the net and found this site and Charlie. He is an experienced biker and quick to respond. We had one off road ride, one long road ride and finished up with two interval workouts the last week, all great rides with a fantastic scenario of the wast and beautiful countryside of Ravda, Bulgaria. Enjoyed the bike-chats with Charlie and got a lot of tips for local restaurants and views as well. Great guide and ride companion - Highly recommended!

Having 'found' Charlie online I was initially dubious about booking rides/hiring bikes etc. with a stranger online. What a gem he turned out to be! Highly knowledgeable about both road riding and the area he now calls home with his lovely wife, Jacky. On our first ride he judged both my experience level and which local (and not so local!) roads to safely ride, knowing all the potholes like the back of his hand and safely negotiating us around mean dogs! The weather was forecast to be thundery and his extensive knowledge of the area kept us away from threatening rain, faultless. Charlie also hired me a Ribble bike, which fitted great. On our second ride we ventured further inland and tackled a 'hill' or two, again this was paced exactly to my requirements and he seemed to intuitively know when l was tiring and knew all the cafes/fresh water fountains to replenish bidons. I'll definitely be back.

I have just spent the week kickstarting my cycle training for a triathlon in the summer. My guide for the week was Charlie Valentine who is the most kind, thoughtful man and whose knowledge of the routes and terrain around Ravda are second to none. I came with a training schedule which he duly embraced and came up with a suitable ride each day. He coached me in new skills and generally improved my riding which gave me heaps more confidence. So if you want a cycling holiday with stunning scenery, empty roads and just that little bit extra, come to visit Bulgaria and experience this wonderful country for yourself!

I want to thank Charlie for a wonderful ride we did together! He's a great partner, a very good rider and an experienced mentor. I really enjoyed the roads he picked for our trip, the scenery and a conversation along the way. Charlie gave me some precious advices that helped a lot! Highly recommend!

Valentin (21.11.16 01:48)

Great way to view Bulgaria! We enjoyed being part of the group. Charlie is a fab guide, giving clear and safe instructions throughout the ride. My partner also booked for an intensive ride which he really enjoyed. We will definitely be booking each time we visit Bulgaria! Thanks Charlie!

It was great to meet up with Chaz and have him guid me through a lot of great rides. I was in Sunny Beach for 2weeks and covered over 500 miles which I would have not been able to do with out Chazes local knowledge. Buiteful roads and ceanary and some really challenging climbs. Local knowledge of all the natural springs make sure you are never dehydrated.. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Having met Charlie in July this year, I was inspired to get on the cycling scene and I purchased a Cyclocross Cannondale based on his expertise. I began commuting to work and doing a couple of 35-50 mile events. As a property owner and regular visitor to Bulgaria, and after seeing Charlie's Strava updates, I was keen to join him on one of his trips. During my recent vacation in October I met with Charlie and he supplied, and did all the necessary adjustments to a perfectly framed bike for my size - a 'Boardman Racer.' On the ride what I enjoyed the most was being able to go at my own pace whilst feeling confident with the advice and guidance given. My only regret has been not having enough time in Bulgaria to experience more of the different routes, however I will most definitely be returning next Summer and I look forward to joining Charlie again. Finally I would like to add, Charlie provides for all levels of fitness and is very accomodating and flexible. I would recommend this to all, especially to those wishing to see more of what Bulgaria has to offer.
